Walk on the Wild Side

January 2022

The village of Great Easton in south Leicestershire is busy gearing up to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a series of exciting outdoor projects to connect local residents to nature. This community programme runs from October 2021 till June 2022 with a focus on nature, the environment and wellbeing.

Plans are underway to create a circular village walk which will be informative and engaging for all ages - this will include the identification of different types of trees, highlight species rich hedgerows and wildlife habitats and feature ridge and furrow fields. Other activities include community planting of 70 fruit trees, apple grafting workshops, nature photography workshops, hanging basket workshops, a youth eco group, i-spy stone hedgehog trails, planters around the village, bug hotels, growing wild flowers and bee friendly plants and an environmental wildlife photography exhibition.

Many residents have signed up to get involved and the committee are working in partnership with the local farmer, Eyebrook Wild Bird Feeds, the parish council, primary school, local wildlife photographer (Andy Murdock) and the Leicestershire Heritage Apple Project.

We are very pleased to be supporting this fantastic community project and have awarded them a Growing Communities grant. If your community group would like to apply for a grant, please click here to find out more.
