Mowmacre Hill Apiary
August 2021
We were very keen to support this exciting new community apiary on an estate in Leicester thanks to a project launched by Buzzing Roots. This is the first beehive project that we’ve funded and it’s based at Mowmacre Hill Primary School in the heart of Beaumont Leys.
Since it’s opening in August 2021, it’s been used by pupils and teachers at the school as well as people living in the area. The project will work with people from different socio-economic backgrounds and support people with additional needs, the aim to improve participant wellbeing. Children will be learning about bees in practical sessions as part of their curricular and cross-curricular activities in and out of school.
This apiary aims to connect the community and help local people to develop new skills. Participants learn how to look after bees, learn about their important role in nature as well as identify pollinator plants.
The project will:
• improve the well-being of children, families and community members
• develop positive relationships and a strong local network
• develop new skills and knowledge to sustain the environment
It is hoped that the project will have a ripple effect in the community encouraging neighbours to create their own green spaces full of garden flowers that provide forage for a wide variety of pollinating insects. The school are planning to create a wild meadow next to the apiary.
Beaumont Leys Project Bees is one of three finalists for Leicestershire Innovation Award in category Innovation in Schools and Colleges!
