David's Wood
December 2019
The foundation has an incredible opportunity to plant a new mixed woodland adjoining the Holwell Nature Reserve near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. This wood will be planted in memory of David Cock. The new site will connect a beautiful existing reserve - Jurassic limestone, belemnite pavement, badgers and the largest bat population in the East Midlands - with another woodland.
It will provide a clear corridor for wildlife and for woodland plants. The Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust are buying the 34 acre plot thanks to a gift of £240,000 and we contributing £50,000 to plant trees on a large proportion of that land. We anticipate planting around 10,000 native British trees such as field maple, birch and oak as well as ground cover of hawthorn, blackthorn etc. A section of the land will dedicated to carbon offsetting for members of the public. Planting is a great way to help sequester carbon emissions.
